Episode 2: Urban Archeology

Long-standing human settlements leave a material record of their past. Can this evidence also exist in sonic form? What soundmaking materials in urban areas contain information about past eras? What data exists in the sonic strata of cities?

From the sounds of resurrected, obsolete equipment, to the echoes of an ancient passageway, to the sound of footsteps treading the same ground others have walked on in ages past, urban areas teem with sonic history.

The World Listening Project invites you to participate in a special project with radio aporee for the first World Listening Day, on Sunday, July 18, 2010.

Radio aporee is an open project about the creation and exploration of public space. Its creator, Udo Noll asks you for help in creating an “audio snapshot of the world” as heard and recorded on World Listening Day. Aporee maps uses the Google maps interface to allow anyone to easily find their location on the map, then upload their audio via the web or mobile phone.

We’re inviting you to send an audio recording from your actual location, or other places of your interest on this day to the maps: http://aporee.org/maps/.

With your contributions collected on World Listening Day, Udo will then create a dedicated project page on the aporee map. As Udo says, “…besides having a nice documentation, I’m really intrigued by the idea of listening to the sounds of a particular day, around the world…” I’m very curious about what will happen, too.

PLEASE NOTE: Contributors should type a tag “WLD” or “world listening day” in the keywords field, so that it can be found by searches.

Please be patient while uploading, depending on your connection this may take a while.

Below are basic instructions on how to send sounds (upload) to the radio aporee soundmap at http://aporee.org/maps/

1. You don’t need a login in order to participate, just a valid email address.
2. Find the location of your audio on the map and click on it
3. A small pops open that says “new place, add recording” with three choices: upload sound, fetch sound from URL, and phone call.
4. Select whichever method you’re using to upload, navigate to the file if it’s on your computer, fill in the form fields for info and email address, then click “ok”
5. Once your audio file has uploaded to the aporee server, check your email for a message from radio aporee
6. In the message you are provided with a link to confirm and edit the info about your audio submission, please remember to TAG YOUR SUBMISSION: “world listening day” and/or “WLD”
7. Once that’s done your sound will appear on http://aporee.org/maps/.

The purposes of World Listening Day are:

To celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around environmental awareness, acoustic ecology, and us
To raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Listening Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography
To design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices

World Listening Day was organized by Dan Godston—President of the World Listening Project (WLP)—in partnership with members of the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE). The date of July 18 was chosen to honor the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, Canadian composer, author, and founder of the World Soundscape Project in Vancouver. Among his many books, The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World (published in 1977) inspired a global, inter-disciplinary field of research and action known as acoustic ecology. The World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE), founded in 1993, is an international association of affiliated organizations and individuals, who share a common concern with the state of the world’s soundscapes.

The American Society for Acoustic Ecology is pleased to announce ASAE Chicago:

“Listening for the Future”

July 9th, 10th & 11th, 2010

This is the first-ever national gathering of the ASAE membership and the general public. Hosted by the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology and the World Listening Project, Listening for the Future will take place from July 9-11, 2010. We think it’s going to be a fantastic three days, with plenty of information and inspiration to go around. We hope you will join us at this landmark event.

Event Highlights

Friday (7/9) – Friday (7/9) - ‘Citizen Sound’ symposium featuring a wine and cheese reception, introductions to each of the ASAE chapters, and presentations by leaders in Chicago’s cultural and advocacy scene. Featured guests include Lou Mallozzi, Executive Director of Experimental Sound Studio and architect Graham Balkany of the Gropius in Chicago Coalition. A media lounge, where guests can sample CDs and peruse publications by participants, performers and ASAE members, will be open all night. Following dinner at a local eatery, we’ll be treated to a concert featuring ASAE member composers, performers and special guests.

Saturday (7/10) – Head “out of town” for an afternoon soundwalk in Miller Woods, at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. After the dunes soundwalk, it’s back to the city for another group dinner followed by a Chicago nightlife soundwalk. This day’s events should provide plenty of opportunities for informal conversation and networking among members.

Sunday (7/11) - ASAE members lead a workshop for children and families. A late afternoon concert and closing reception will follow. ASAE members from New York, San Francisco, the Midwest, Southwest and beyond will present their works.

The ASAE – Listening for the Future

During the course of these events, the ASAE’s governing body and leaders from all the regional chapters will be meeting to brainstorm for the future of the organization. We will be soliciting input from you – our members – as we embark on this important work. Please plan to share any ideas, concerns or questions about the organization that you might have.

All events, including both concerts, the ‘Citizen Sound’ symposium, the soundwalks and the workshop are free for ASAE members (current for 2010). All meals are pay-your-own, but we’ll be making advance reservations so will ask you to register. Transportation between venues, including the Dunes soundwalk, will be via public transit. These costs are not covered by the ASAE, but we will plan to meet and travel as a group to the Dunes soundwalk.

We’re working now to put together a list of hotels and travel resources for those of you attending from afar. Homestays with Chicago MSAE and WLP members may also be possible.

Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology and The World Listening Project are seeking submissions for The Empty Spaces, a compilation release on the Wandering Ear netlabel. Launched in 2006, Wandering Ear is dedicated to releasing field recording-oriented audio from around the world. The concept is deliberately open-ended to accomodate the unexpected. Co-curated by Nathan Larson and Mike Hallenbeck, all Wandering Ear releases are available for free download by individual track or as a zipped file containing all tracks under a Creative Commons License for personal use.

The Empty Space is an invitation for new or existing field recordings and field recording-based audio submissions that explore the sonic qualities of the Empty Space. All tracks of this CD-length compilation will be exclusive to the Wandering Ear site and will be available for free download for non-commercial use under a Creative Commons License.

Submissions must have field recordings as a substantial element, but could include montages, audio manipulation, voiceover, narration, etc.
Submissions may be no more than 10 minutes duration, recommended length is 6-8 minutes.

You are invited to join the World Listening Project at a Soundwalk scheduled for Saturday, August 17 at the Chicago Center for Green Technology. During a Soundwalk participants explore their soundscape using a score as a guide. Free and open to the public, all ages, these soundwalks are being facilitated by Dan Godston, Chad Clark and Norman Long. We meet at CCGT at 10:00 AM for a brief tour of the premises, the soundwalk begins immediately following. This soundwalk, co-organized by WLP and CCGT, takes place both inside and outside the building — through the Resource Center, on the CCGT roof, past the rain cisterns, through “elementhouse,” the 2007 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Solar Decathlon entry, to the eastern part of the property by the solar berm and green roof test plots, and through the prairie-wetland.

THE WORLD LISTENING PROJECT (WLP) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practices of listening and field recording. WLP maintains and develops a repository of sound recordings and provides access to this information via web-based technologies, workshops, forums, lectures, and festivals. WLP hereby seeks to encourage worldwide opportunities for collaboration, education, curation, research and experimentation across the disciplines of the arts, humanities, and the social and natural sciences.

July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. Schafer is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement. The World Soundscape Project, which he directed, is an important organization which has inspired a lot of activity in this field, and his book Soundscape: The Tuning of the World helped to define many of the terms and background behind the acoustic ecology movement.

Here is how you can participate in World Listening Day:

Now is a great time to become a member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE).

The WFAE is an international association of affiliated organizations and individuals, who share a common concern with the state of the world’s soundscapes. Our members represent a multi-disciplinary spectrum of individuals engaged in the study of the social, cultural and ecological aspects of the sonic environment.

The WFAE has seven international affiliate organizations with three in Europe, two in North America, and one each in Japan, and Australia. New affiliates have formed in Mexico and Greece. The WFAE’s bi-monthly newsletter features announcements of our work in the World Listening Project.

Das Kleine Field Recordings Festival

Das Kleine Field Recordings Festival is basically a “no-budget” presentation series for field recording in all its artistic expressions, organized in Berlin by Rinus Alebeek. Live presentation events occur frequently. Since 2009, these have been held in venues and festivals outside of Berlin as well.

Coming up on Saturday the 6th of February in Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg, Rinus says, “…you can witness a very unlikely trio of Paulo Raposo/murmer/John Grzinich, and a lecture/performance by the highly entertaining Baruch Gottlieb with sounds of Swiss Cows (probably).”

The “Acoustic Mirror of the World” is a sculpture/installation that provides a tactile experience of sound. It was recently located to the Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center in Chicago, a wonderful new location following its four-month run in the “Synesthetic Plan of Chicago.”

The World Listening Project (WLP) invites you to submit your field recordings and make the “Acoustic Mirror of the World into a point of access to soundscape recordings from around the world. This sculpture/installation built for the tactile experience* of sounds was recently moved to the Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center in Chicago, a wonderful new location following its four-month run in the “Synesthetic Plan of Chicago,” an exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center marking the 100-year anniversary of Daniel Burnham’s 1909 “Plan of Chicago.”

Please download and read the following submission guidelines provided below. [*In a nutshell, because the "Acoustic Mirror of the World" is activated by a stereo pair of two low-frequency drivers, the recordings that work best are those possessing significant amounts of low-frequency energy. Hence, the "tactile sensation" described in the following guidelines.]
