Cairo’s automobility is one of the most profound factors influencing the urban and aural experience of the city. To fully experience Cairo’s vast, massive and expanding urban landscape one must travel through it by vehicle. Since residents have a special connection to their cars, which encompasses their navigational needs, traveling by vehicle has become a way to experience the city as a local and witness one of its most profound cultural practices. “The Seasons: Listening to a Changing World” with Linda O’Keeffe (Session Seven, August 2024)

The title of the next session on listening is called “The Seasons: Listening to a Changing World” and it will be lead by Linda O’Keeffe, PhD. She will discuss her latest work, The Seasons, commissioned by Northern Lights for the Huddersfield New Music Festival. This piece examines the profound shifts in our seasonal patterns as we face the realities of the climate crisis. Drawing inspiration from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the work delves into the evolving sonic landscapes shaped by extreme weather fluctuations, loss of biodiversity, and the potential futures we may face—a world where technology merges with nature or one where many species, including humans, have vanished. Through this exploration, I aim to listen deeply to the ways our environment is transforming and consider what these changes mean for both human and non-human life. Title: Rocks are People Too
In 2023, 362 Mongolian rivers significantly shrunk in size or disappeared. People around the world are worried about lost rivers and environmental change. There is a story in our paths, the paths of water and the paths of people. This listening session explores these stories and these paths aiming to refocus us on nature, and bringing reconnection to a place that can feel lost.
Core ideas explored include: Gentle Environmental Activism, Human Timescales, Listening Beneath our feet, environment as gallery space, Listening to understand suffering.This is the fifth in a series of Sessions on Listening that the World Listening Project is hosting this year.
