“Deep Listening to Nature” with Andrew Skeoch (Session 18, February 2026)
11 a.m. UTC+11 on Tuesday, February 25th / 6 p.m. UTC-6 on Monday, February 24th
What does nature have to say to us in these confronting times? When we listen to the natural environment, we hear what is happening. Listening holistically, we can hear not just individual birdsongs, frog calls and so on, but their patterns of communication. These patterns express the principles that inform the functioning of ecosystems and generate viable living systems. They are principles that can be articulated clearly, and are inspiringly relevant. Thus listening to nature as our teacher, can guide us in shaping our human systems – our societies, values, economies and governance – to be safe, ecologically respectful and sustainable.
Andrew Skeoch is a professional wildlife sound recordist and author of Deep Listening to Nature. Over the past thirty years, he has documented the sounds of environments around the planet, and through his label ‘Listening Earth’, published over one hundred recordings allowing listeners to immerse themselves in wild soundscapes from around the world. As an educator, he has spoken extensively to community and academic audiences, appeared at festivals such as WOMAD’s Planet Talks, and presented radio features, keynote addresses and a TEDx talk. He is the president of the Australian Wildlife Sound Recording Group, and on the board of the Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology.

“Auralities of the Earth and Soil” with Ivan Rivelli (Session 17, January 2026)

Auralities of the Earth and Soil: Performative listening practices from the South.
How to expand the enunciative possibilities of the phonographic act? Field recording involves a particular type of listening whose audible trace is
configured as part of a web of meanings. A journey through listening experiences and field recordings in the Comarca Andina del Paralelo 42 is proposed, to raise some questions about listening to the Earth and the soil that allow reflection on the ways of expanding sound beyond the physical phenomenon.Ivan Rivelli‘s artistic practice focuses on research processes that explore sound and listening as particular forms of knowledge. In some cases, the production of the sound piece acquires its own meaning, but most often it results in the materialization of a broader process, such as a poetic action, a drift, an installation, an audiovisual work, etc. He is interested in enunciations from phonography, field recording, and the problematization of the soundscape in its connection to representations of a specific territory. Since 2016 Ivan has coordinated the operation of the Mapa Sonoro de la Comarca Andina, a collaborative digital platform with georeferenced field recordings.

“Field Recording and Electronic Music” with Rebecca Goldberg (Session 13, February 2025)

You’re invited to join us for “Field Recording and Electronic Music — with Detroit-based sound artist Rebecca Goldberg“: Tuesday, February 18th (11 p.m. UTC+0 / 6 p.m. UTC-5). Field recording in electronic music has roots dating back to the mid-20th century, with pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer and Delia Derbyshire integrating environmental sounds into experimental compositions. This practice highlights the difference between “hearing” (the passive reception of sounds) and “listening” (a more intentional, analytical engagement with those sounds), as it invites listeners to engage with soundscapes in a deeper, more conscious way. Field recordings also serve as an archive, preserving sounds of the natural world, urban environments, and cultural moments that might otherwise fade away. By combining the organic sounds of nature with synthetic or electronic processing, field recordings create a fusion of the natural and machine worlds, often blurring the boundaries between the two and inviting new sonic experiences.
