You are invited to participate in World Listening Day 2019, an annual global event held every July 18.

This year’s theme is LISTENING WITH created by internationally acclaimed sound artist Annea Lockwood.

Listening with …

listening with the neighborhood

at midnight, and again at dawn.

Listening with an awareness that all around you are other life-forms simultaneously listening and sensing with you – plant roots, owls, cicadas, voles – mutually intertwined within the web of vibrations which animate and surround our planet.

Since its inception in 2010, dozens of organizations and thousands of people from six continents have participated in World Listening Day. Help us share and grow participation in this annual event please by adding your information to our online form.

July 18th is the birth date of renowned Canadian composer, music educator, and author, R. Murray Schafer. His World Soundscape Project developed the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s. These inform the current, burgeoning interest in our changing acoustic environment. Thus, World Listening Day honors Schafer’s contribution to understanding our world.

  4. Dear Eric
I am curating LISTEN a Season of Sound Art, for Black Swan Arts in Frome, Somerset, UK. The dates of the season are 20th July – 1st September 2019 – neatly bookmarked by World Listening Day (18th July) and Sound Walk Sunday (1st September). Our season will include a wide range of genres (installation, exhibition, concerts, soundwalks, workshops, talks, theraputic sound bathing and oral history) with all the associated different ways of listening.

We are already talking to the organisers of Sound Walk Sunday. We would also be very keen to link up with the World Listening Project for exchange of ideas and work and mutual promotion and publicity. Is this something you would be interested in? And if so can we talk about possibilities?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Helen Ottaway, Composer and sound artist, Curator, LISTEN, Season of Sound Art.

    • Dear Helen,

Yes, thank you. I’ll email you soon about scheduling time to discuss how we can work together.

      All the best,
      Eric

    • Dear Silvana,

Thank you for posting your question on the World Listening Project’s website about the World Listening Day 2019 submission form. Annea Lockwood passed your message onto me and asked that we respond.

First, on behalf of the World Listening Project (WLP) I would like to express my thanks to you for completing and submitting the online form. This information helps the organization quantify the impact of our efforts in order to keep serving our mission more effectively into the future.

Secondly, and more directly to your question, you do not need the WLP’s permission or approval to participate. The concept of World Listening Day is to make it an open and participatory event for anyone anywhere. Any individual or organizations who wishes to participate may do so without our permission or approval. We simply wish that participation be open to as many as possible.

We are also happy to share your social media content on the WLP’s social media channels, on Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo, and Twitter. Please “like” our Facebook Page and let us know if you have a Facebook Event. We will share it on our page.

If you would like to use our logo on your print and digital materials, please ask and we will send the graphic file.

      All the best,

      Eric
